As of 2024, cervical cancer remains a significant public health challenge in India. It is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the country, with an age-standardized incidence rate of approximately 22 cases per 100,000 women annually. India accounts for more than 20% of global cervical cancer deaths.One major factor contributing to these high mortality rates is the lack of effective screening and timely treatment, which leads to a large proportion of cases being diagnosed at advanced stages. The 5-year relative survival rate for cervical cancer in India is around 46%, but this drops to as low as 7.4% for advanced-stage disease, compared to over 70% for localized cases.Efforts to combat cervical cancer in India include a recent initiative to create 100 cervical cancer-free districts by focusing on HPV vaccination, screening, and pre-cancer treatment.
