Symptoms and Signs of Cancer
Title:
Symptoms and Warning Signs of Cancer - Signs That Should Not Be Ignored
Abstract:
Cancer, though a deadly disease, can be treated appropriately if detected early. Hence, watching out for its early signs and symptoms is important.
Description:
Introduction
Improved cancer screening facilities have enabled better survival rates and longer longevity of cancer survivors. In addition to making healthy choices like eating a balanced diet, exercising and maintaining an optimal weight, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and limiting sun exposure, a routine cancer screening helps to detect the disease early. It also enables better treatment options with a better prognosis than in the advanced stages, with limited treatment options.
What Is the Difference Between a Sign and a Symptom?
When a disease or injury occurs in the body, it starts showing signs and symptoms. Noting these signs and symptoms helps understand the diagnosis and get appropriate treatment. While they sound similar, signs and symptoms have a thin line of difference, making them two separate entities.
A sign, like fever or bleeding, can be evaluated or seen by another person or people around. On the other hand, a symptom like pain or fatigue is experienced by the sick person and can not be evaluated by those around them.
The signs and symptoms of cancer can depend on many factors, like the area affected, the stage it is diagnosed, its size, and many other factors. In the advanced stages of cancer, where there has been metastasis (spread to the other parts of the body), signs and symptoms might be seen in other parts of the body that are affected as well.
How Do the Signs and Symptoms Show Up in Cancer?
As cancer advances, it begins to push itself into the nearby tissues, organs, blood vessels, and nerves. This causes increased pressure in the nearby areas and begins showing signs and symptoms of cancer.
Symptoms like fever, unexplained weight loss, extreme tiredness, etc., can also be signs and symptoms of cancer. Cancer cells use significantly more energy than normal cells, resulting in these symptoms. There is also a possibility that the cancer cells produce substances that drain the energy made for them. In response to an abnormal cell in the body, the immune system might also act in different ways, causing signs and symptoms.
What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Cancer?
There are more than 200 different types of cancer, and each cancer has some specific signs and symptoms. Some signs of cancer might be in the affected area, like the skin or the breast. On the other hand, some might show generalized symptoms, like unexplained weight loss or tiredness.
Some signs are specific, like a lump in the breast. These can be identified easily and treated appropriately. However, every lump might not be cancer, and all lumps can not be avoided by thinking they are not cancer. Hence, timely diagnosis is essential in identifying the warning signs of cancer.
Two people with the same type of cancer can have different symptoms, depending on its stage, the area affected, the blood supply, and the nerves in the area. Some people might not show any signs or symptoms. However, if any unusual symptom is observed in the body, it must not be ignored without checking with a healthcare professional. Early cancer detection helps provide better treatment and prognosis than those diagnosed later.
10 Potential Warning Signs of Cancer.
Some signs, like a lump, pain, mole, or heartburn, might not necessarily be symptoms of cancer. In most cases, they can be signs of some underlying condition, which, when managed appropriately, would be resolved. However, no sign should be considered silly, lest it should be a warning sign of malignancy. Any unusual changes should be noted, and a healthcare professional should consult with them.
This is especially true if:
The symptoms worsen within a few weeks.
The unusual lump persists for many weeks.
There is a family history of some kind of malignancy.
Some signs that can be looked out for include;
Unexplained Weight Loss: Sudden loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss of ten pounds or more, etc., must be considered seriously and dealt with appropriately. These could be warning signs of cancers in the gastrointestinal tract. It could also be a sign of some other kinds of cancers, as all cancers show unexplained weight loss. This is mainly because the cancer cells take up all the energy stored for proliferation.
Recurrent Fever and Night Sweats: Any infection or disease is usually identified by a fever. The body’s immune system attempts to fight the foreign body that entered. However, if unusual symptoms like night sweats accompany the fever, it must be attended to appropriately. It must also be taken care of when an explanation for the fever can not be found or if it persists for weeks or months.
Unexplained Pain: If persistent pain or body aches occur without an illness or injury being detected, it is high time to get it checked. For instance, a pain in the abdomen or a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum might be a warning sign of cancer in the urinary system. An unusual pain or tenderness in a woman’s breasts might indicate breast cancer and must be attended to.
Persistent Indigestion or Reflex: When a person who has never had indigestion suddenly develops indigestion for many days, it could indicate a malignancy in the digestive system. Hence, it is advisable to get it checked.
Unusual Persistent Bloating or Nausea: Any pain or discomfort in the abdominal area, a feeling of fullness without eating, distended stomach, unusual bloating, etc., must be attended to appropriately.
Chronic Mouth Ulcers: Persistent mouth ulcers that fail to heal must be taken care of. This is especially true if accompanied by habits like smoking, drinking alcohol, or chewing tobacco. These could be warning signs of oral cancer.
Changes in the Bowel or Urinary Habits: If persistent constipation or diarrhea without any due cause is observed, it must be taken care of. They could be signs of inflammatory conditions like Crohn’s disease or a malignancy in the gastrointestinal tract. Frequent urination, pain while urinating, or a weak stream could signify an infection or malignancy in the urinary tract. The presence of blood in stool or urine must also be given appropriate attention.
Unusual Swellings or Changes in the Skin: A newly developed mole, freckle, wart, or bruise must be appropriately dealt with. They could warn of skin cancer. A healthcare professional must evaluate any unusual lumps or swollen lymph nodes. Swellings in any part of the body without an evident cause must be taken care of immediately.
Difficulty Swallowing or Change in Voice: A difficulty swallowing food or a feeling of a lump in the throat that persists for many weeks or months should be consulted with a doctor. A dry cough that lasts for weeks without a known cause could need immediate attention. This is especially true if there is blood in the sputum. Any changes in the voice, like strained, airy, or raspy, could be signs of thyroid or throat cancer and hence must be taken care of appropriately.
Chronic Headaches: Headaches that last two or more weeks and are not relieved by over-the-counter drugs must be shown to a doctor and managed appropriately. Any changes in vision or speech, drooping of the face, or seizures must be attended to immediately.
Conclusion
While the symptoms of cancer have a wide range, no unusual signs or symptoms must be left unattended. This article draws a humble attempt to list many probable warning signs that could help diagnose some kinds of malignancies. The potential warning signs, however, are not limited to the ones mentioned above. Any unusual signs in the body must be considered severe and attended to immediately.
